Moving Images Talkies at the Hyderabad Literary Festival 2025 celebrates diverse cinematic voices, bringing narratives that explore cultural identity, history, environmentalism, and human connection. Featuring filmmakers from across India and the globe, this edition’s selection promises a rich blend of visual storytelling.

Highlights:

  • Asamana Anasuya – A biographical documentary of a legendary and gifted singer-composer, who left an indelible stamp on the Telugu music industry. She excelled in classical music but chose to compose a folk genre.
  • Aakhreen Train (The Last Train) – A poignant Sindhi feature film by Susheel Gajwani, based on Shri Thakur Chawla’s platonic love story, delving into the trauma of Partition and the indomitable human spirit.
  • The Last Day – A Lithuanian documentary by Klaudija Matvejevaitė, based on Jaroslavas Melnikas’s short story “The Book of Destinies”. It is an introspective dive into existentialism and human fate.
  • Ilm Ka Shehar – A captivating essay film exploring Hyderabad’s 19th-century intellectual culture juxtaposed against its modern transformation into a “Knowledge City.” Directed by SSAF-AAA Research Grant recipient, the film features the work of Dr. Syed Mohiuddin Qadri Zor. 
  • Susman – A tribute to the legendary Shyam Benegal, and his deep empathy for grassroots people. It also marks Shabana Azmi’s 50 years of cinema and is underlined by the narrative in Dakhni and rooted in Pochampally. This 1987 classic sheds light on the struggles of rural handloom weavers amidst rapid industrialization.
  • Sindhustan – Directed by Sapna Bhavnani, this personal documentary intertwines stories of Sindhi migration and cultural resilience, illustrated through the filmmaker’s journey of inking her legs with Ajrak and Madhubani art. A story told on the skin, reflecting roots carried across borders.
  • You Am I – A thought-provoking Lithuanian film by Kristijonas Vildziunas, chronicles a man’s search for solace in the woods, leading to unexpected love and conflict.
  • Chittha – Directed by S.U. Arun Kumar, this emotional Tamil drama explores the devastating ripple effects of a missing child on a family. Seeing this film will enable a better understanding of Siddharth’s interaction the next day in the plenary session in the Literature Stream.
  • Wild Vietnam – The Story of Environmental Impact of the Vietnam War – Wildlife biologists Amit Goswamy and Chetan Rao document Vietnam’s hidden ecological scars from the war, offering a unique perspective on conservation in Southeast Asia.
  • Lights, Camera, Inclusion – A trio of Indian films made by young filmmakers, promoting accessibility in storytelling. Short, impactful films.
  • Teertham 108: Naimisharanya: The Timeless Temple Town—Directed by Puneet Sikka. This documentary combines stunning AI-generated graphics with captivating music, bringing the mystical aura of Naimisharanya to life like never before.
