Sunil Kothari is a noted scholar, teacher, critic, and historian of Indian dance. He obtained a PhD in dance from the M S University of Baroda (1977) and was Professor and Head of Department of Dance at Rabindra Bharati University and JNU. He has been a Fulbright scholar, and a visiting professor at many universities in India and abroad. His books (about twenty)on various Indian dance forms are based on his field work and study of Sanskrit texts. He is the recipient of the Sangeet Natak Akademi and the Padma Shri awards, among others.
