S Y Quraishi has been the 17th Chief Election Commissioner of India (2010-2012). After Honours and Master’s degrees in History from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi, he joined the IAS in 1971. He has served as Secretary, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports; Director General, National AIDS Control Organization (NACO); and Director General, Doordarshan. Dr Quraishi’s books include Social Marketing for Social Change (1996), which has broken new ground in the field of development communication, and Old Delhi: Living Traditions (2010). More recently, he published An Undocumented Wonder: The Making of the Great Indian Election (2014).
