Devaki Jain is the author of The Brass Notebook: A Memoir (2020). She graduated in economics and philosophy from Oxford University, was a lecturer in economics at Miranda House, Delhi, and Director of the Institute of Social Studies Trust. She founded Development Alternatives for Women for a New Era (DAWN), Third World network of women social scientists, and the Institute of Social Studies Trust (ISST). She has been a member of the State Planning Board of Karnataka, the South Commission, and the Advisory Committee for UNDP Human Development Report on Poverty. She is a recipient of the Padma Bhushan and an honorary doctorate from the University of Westville, South Africa.
