Jameela Nishat is a poet and a rights activist. She established ‘Shaheen Women’s Resource and Welfare Association’ in 2002 to rescue young girls and women from abusive environments and patriarchal strangleholds. As a poet, she favours the marginalized Urdu dialect Dakhini and has edited Inkeshaf (2000) an anthology of Deccan Women Writers. Her work has been widely translated and featured in several anthologies, including Women Writing in India (1991) and In Their Own Voice (1992). She received several awards including the Devi Award of The New Indian Express and the prestigious Ladli Award (2012) for her radio play Jawani Diwani.
