Kavery Nambisan is a surgeon and novelist. Most of her surgical career was spent in the rural areas of Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Tamilnadu, and Karnataka. She has published children’s books, essays, and seven novels, including The Scent of Pepper (1996), Mango-Coloured Fish (1998), and The Story That Must Not Be Told (2010), which were all shortlisted for major literary awards. A Luxury Called Health: A Doctor’s Journey Through the Art, the Science and the Trickery of Medicine (2021) is her latest non-fiction book. She was an International Writing Fellow at the University of Iowa (2007) and a writer-in-residence at Shanghai.
